Placement!

3 mei 2008

YES YES YES!

I've been placed! (as most of you already might know, but I am kind of lazy posting on this blog haha)

But finally, after waiting for about 1,5 month I've been placed at the most beautifull camp Westwind, in Otis at the coast of Oregon. For all you dutch people who don't know where that is, Oregon is a state at the westcoast of the US, one state above California. The main city is Portland.

First of all I am very excited about the location. My wish was to be as close as could be to California. I know that in the states the distances are very different than here in Holland. But Orgeon-California is closer than say Florida-California. I had a wish to visit California for actually all my life, because I have the feeling I have some roots there. When I was small I heard a lot of stories from my mom about it. Not that the subject in our house was constantly about the states, but it does has an impact to a young child. And also I have my dad and my halfbrother living there, as well as some old friends of my mother. Okay, back to Oregeon. I looked up the website, as told in the previous message, and it looks so beautyfull. I just can't wait to see the ocean, the forest, the lakes, the hills, the trees. It will be so diffrent than in Holland. I mean, Holland is beautifull and I sometimes can really appreciate our simple peace and landscape. But we don't have a lot of overwelming nature, wildlife, mountains, etc.

Then my job function. I was called by the camp director, named Kim Summers. Altough we didn't had a very long conversation (was lounging in a bar at fridaynight with my friends and she called on my cellphone) she sounded really nice! She had a friendly and enthousiastic voice.

She told me that she was looking for a camp supervisor...a supervisor? I wanted to be a special counselor, so what was this all about? This supervisor had to take care off 3 or 4 other counselors. When a counselor would have a problem with a child and couldn't manage it alone, they can ask for support from the supervisor. Also the supervisor would assist in organising camp activities. Wow, organising activities...that's what I've been studying for the last six years. I told her that the role as a supervisor sounded very perfect for me, as I enjoy to being a leader and a coach and have a lot of ideas how to organise activities. But I did apply to work on a summercamp to work with kids. She told me not to worry. The camp had a ranch where the kids got lessons in horse back riding. In between the lessons they had all the time for campactivities wich I would lead and accompany. The role supervisor - working with kids would be about 20% - 80%. Wow, that sounded nice! I told her that the job really sounded good, as I had a lot of ideas an quallities but also wanted to be creative and play. She told me that my profile looked perfect for the job, that I was a little older then most counselors and that I had a lot of experience with children.

I asked her how to go from here...was I hired now? She said yes, I want to have you here within 30 days and we are going to have an amazing summer!
